It was a temperate evening and a great crowd showed up to look at our gallery improvements, and enjoy a studio open house. After doing this a few times we've gotten better at having the right amount of food and beverage, and this time ran short of nothing except a little red wine. It's always the red wine!

It was wonderful seeing family and a real mix of friends within the stained glass and fused glass industry, along with many past and present clients. Two of those were Senator Bob Packwood and his wife Elaine, who like many people, had not yet been to our new location and seen our new showroom. A few years ago we did a leaded glass entry for the Senator and Elaine and it was a pleasure seeing them again, as it was with so many people.

Within in the industry many of the usual suspects showed up including our friends from Manion Company, McCormick and Schmicks offices, Terry Welter from Cline Glass Co. and Ray Ahlgren and Melissa Cate from Fire Art

We recently added a few new display walls in the showroom where we can now backlight some stained glass and sandblasted glass panels. Combined with our fused glass, mosaic glass work, and new stained glass divider, it made for a look that seemed to go over well. The last of the crowd drifted out about 10 pm and after a little reflection and cleanup, Carol and I wistfully locked the door and went home at midnight.

-Chuck

Just in time for the holidays

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 154px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Qz4yrc2d3QM/STSeRV_lSyI/AAAAAAAAARs/MAoj2R1wn2o/s200/wcs_cvr.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275015084356487970" />
The new book about our studio Windows of Character & Style by Wardell Publishing contains 140 color photos, a lot of information about what we do, and a very nice history section.

To read an excerpt, click on the image of the book to the right.

When in Portland, for stained glass, art glass, etched glass and more, visit the showroom of Chuck Franklin Glass Studio at 4309 NW St. Helens Road Portland Oregon 97210

UPDATE: We’ve moved!
Our new location is at 2708 N. It was brought up, for example, that even though CFGS has been producing here in Portland for over three decades, most of the work is spread out across the country. The result is that local awareness of who we are and what we do is not quite what we would like it to be.

Of the many ideas we talked about, one quickly became the favorite - that "participating in a trade show" could be a good way to get some exposure to the public as well as other local businesses.

A week later at our next meeting we reviewed a list of potential choices. One stood out as our best bet - "The Portland Home and Garden Show", but there was one problem - it was to take place in three weeks! There was much to consider; Was there enough time to produce or gather enough product to sell, and devise cohesive presentations? Could we design, build, and set-up a decent looking display booth AND run the thing for four days? All of this would need to be accomplished right along with everything else that had already been scheduled for the month.

This was just one step in our larger strategy which is simply to keep moving forward. There is no doubt that for many, these are hard times. As a small business, we believe the best way we can help our community is not only to "hang in there", but somehow actually to grow, and we believe we can do that. We are already planning for the next trade show - which will be The Spring Portland Home and Garden Show February 18-22. Hope to see you there.

An Introduction

Welcome to our latest edition to the website. We plan on keeping this updated with information on current projects and stained glass news in general.

If you haven't stopped by the studio in a while, you might be surprised if you do. We moved! Our new place is much larger. For the first time we have a sizeable showroom, plenty of office space, a nice conference room, extra parking... it goes on and on. It's a wonderful place to work in and it's perfect for visitors too, so by all means come and see us, we'll be happy to show you around.

It's been a busy year so far. Back on April 5th Chuck received the Art Glass Association 2008 Lifetime achievement Award. It was awarded at the Glass and Bead Expo in Las Vegas. Previewing at that convention was the new book about our studio published by Wardell Publications entitled Windows of Character & Style (available at most stained glass stores or can be ordered by contacting us).

In June the Glass Art Society had their convention here in Portland and on June 18th we were one of the local studios that entertained G.A.S. tours. There were five tours going all day and it was fun showing the studio to fellow glass enthusiasts.

Our latest work for McCormick & Schmick's has included restaurants in Anaheim, Washington D.C. (National Harbor), Raleigh NC, Rosemont (Chicago), Harrah's Casino in Atlantic City, and of course, Houston (where our installers actually got to experience Hurricane "Ike"). Currently we are getting
ready for Naples Florida.

In addition to this news blog we've also recently added a new section featuring our sandblasted glass and in the near future we will also be adding an online store. From smaller gift items to larger pieces of glass art, from fused glass to stained glass and sandblasted glass, all will be available for easy purchase and shipping. More to come on this later.
